Celebrating Creativity in Our Mother Tongue

On Friday, April 4th, the award ceremony for the third edition of the IBS Creative Writing Mother Language Competition took place in the Amphitheatre. This exciting event celebrated the rich linguistic diversity of our school community and highlighted the creativity of our students.

A Unique Challenge

Participants were challenged to begin their written pieces in their mother or heritage tongue—languages other than English or French—with the evocative phrase, “The school bell rings...”. This creative prompt invited students to unlock their imaginations.

We received a total of 30 creative texts in a variety of languages, including Chinese, Spanish, Romanian, German, Bulgarian, Italian, Thai, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Dutch.

Winners of the Competition

  • First Place (9–11 year olds): Leonardo C.B. from 6e won first place in his category with the poem “IL MIO PRIMO GIORNO DI SCUOLA”, written in Italian.

  • First Place (12–14 year olds): Maya K. from 4e clinched the top spot in her category with the essay “ПРОЗВЕНЕЛ ШКОЛЬНЫЙ ЗВОНОК”, written in Russian.

  • First Place (15–18 year olds): Kiara M. from Pre-IB2 earned first place in her category with the short story “ИЗГУБЕНИ В УЧИЛИЩЕТО”, written in Bulgarian.

All winners received prizes to celebrate their outstanding work and creative expression.

A Multilingual Community

We take great pride in our multilingual community and the creativity it inspires. The IBS Creative Writing Mother Language Competition is a testament to our ongoing efforts to encourage students to speak, write, and preserve their mother and heritage languages.
